US Congressman. In 1823, he migrated to Nashville, Tennessee, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Paris, Tennessee. He became Judge of the Chancery Court of West Tennessee in 1835 and held this position until elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, reelected to the two succeeding Congresses, serving (1841-47). After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was one of the founders of Southwestern University and Lambuth College, Tennessee. He served also as the president of the Mississippi Central & Tennessee Railroad Company (1854-56) and president of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad Company, (1856-71) he died at age 79 in Jackson, Tennessee.
