Alabama Governor. He graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1893, graduated with a law from Yale University, in 1896, was admitted to the bar in 1897 and opened a legal practice in Montgomery, Alabama. Entering politics, he was a of the Alabama House of Representatives, (1898-1901) and was adjutant general of Alabama National Guard, (1907-11). During World War I, he served in France, as Colonel of the 117th Field Artillery, 31st Division, U.S. Army. In 1926, he was elected as a Democrat the 38th Governor of Alabama and elected again serving (1935-39). During his first term, a gasoline tax was passed, the state docks were finished, the convict lease system was repealed and a $25 million road bond was enacted. During his second term, the Alabama State Employment Service, the Board of Adjustment, the Department of Labor and the Rural Electrification Authority were all established. He was preparing to run for a third term as Governor when he died at age 68. His wife Dixie Graves was Alabama's first woman U.S. Senator.
