U.S. Congressman. Learning the printing trade, he was successful as a representative for several newspapers in Washington, D.C., (1888-91) and as editor-publisher of a newspaper at Pine City, Minnesota. He was a United States Marshal for the district of Minnesota in 1894. In 1903, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his publisher interests and was a lecturer until his death at age 86.
