He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1828. He then served as a Register of Probate from 1830 to 1838, and continued with his practice of law in his native Norridgewock, Maine, until 1841. He then decided to enter politics and served as a Member of the Maine State Legislature in 1840, and as a Member of the State Senate from 1842 to 1844. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Benjamin White (1790-1860), on March 4, 1845. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Maine's 5th District (Twenty-Ninth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1845, to March 3, 1847. During his time in the United States Congress during his first term in office, he also served as Chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business representing the Twenty-Ninth Congress. After his first term in office expired, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Ephraim Knight Smart (1813-1872), on March 4, 1847.
