U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving to Arizona, in 1883, he was a businessman, prospector and politician, who served as a Territorial delegate and Arizona’s first representative in the US Senate. He was the builder of the Bright Angel trail into the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona, was Sheriff of Coconino County, (1891, 1894-98), and a member of the board of supervisors of Coconino County, (1905-07). In 1909, he was elected as a Republican Delegate to the Sixty-first and Sixty-second Congresses, serving until 1912. When Arizona was admitted as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1921-27). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he pursued in gold mining in California and Arizona, until his death from a heart attack at age 89 while on a business trip to the East coast.
