He was elected to represent Georgia's 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 to 1883. Also served as United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia from 1883 to 1885, Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia from 1885 until his death in 1918.
