U.S. Congressman. A prominent figure in the State of Georgia politics, he served as a state Judge, (1856-58) and in the Georgia House of Representatives, in 1859. He practiced law with Robert Lanier, the father of poet Sidney Lanier. With the advent of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and was elected to represent Georgia in the Second Confederate Congress, serving (1864-65). After the war, he was elected the Georgia State Attorney General, serving (1880-90). After his term, he lived in retirement until his death at age 66.
