9th Montana Governor. Relocating to Montana in 1891, he with his brother established the Cooney Brokerage Company in Butte, in 1894. Together they expanded their business with holdings in the livestock and agricultural fields. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Montana, and when Governor John E. Erickson resigned from office, Cooney assumed the duties as the 9th Montana Governor in 1933. While in office, Governor Cooney suffered heart difficulties and died at age 62.
