US Congressman. He attended local common schools, was a farmer and pursued interests in the agricultural business before entering politics. Born in Harrison, New York, he first served as a Member of the New York State Assembly in 1833 and 1834, and then was elected as the Sheriff of Westchester County, New York, serving in that position from 1835 to 1838. A Democrat, he then served New York's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1847. During his time in the United States Congress, he also served as Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture during the 29th Congress. He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1846. After his time in politics, he retired to continue his interest in farming. He passed away in White Plains, New York, at the age of 69 and was buried in the family burial ground. His great-grandson was the New York State Senator Henry A. Wise, who died in 1982.
