U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born in Weston, Vermont, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He was a member New Hampshire House of Representatives (1852-55), when elected by the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress and as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving (1855-59). In 1864, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1877. After his term he was appointed by President Rutherford Hayes as one of the commissioners for the purchase of the Hot Springs Reservation in Arkansas, serving (1877-79). He died at age 77 in Washington, D.C.
