US Congressman. He graduated from Indiana University in 1874, from its law department in 1876, was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced to practice in Jasper, Indiana. Moving to Marion, Iowa, in 1881, then to Mitchell, Dakota Territory in 1882 and he continued the practice of law. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1900 and a member of the South Dakota State Senate. In 1913, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-third, Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1919. Not a candidate for reelection, resumed the practice of law and was a elected associate justice of the South Dakota State Supreme Court in 1922 and served until he retired in 1926.
