Al was assigned to Company D 106th Cavalry and served as a Reconnaissance Car Crewman. He served in combat in France as a gunner, mechanized cavalry reconnaissance car. He operated a light machine gun mounted on a jeep to provide protection for the crew.

He had also been trained as a scout working for this same crew. In 1945 he was working for this crew driving a motorcycle when he hit a land mine. The US Army reported to his family that he had been killed, when, in fact, he was wounded. He fractured his right ankle, lost his knee cap, fractured his nose and right small finger.

His service record shows that he served in the Normandy Campaign and received the following decorations and citations: Good Conduct Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, One Bronze Campaign Star and American Theater Ribbon, Purple Heart.
