US Congressman. Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, he volunteered for Continental Army service in the Revolutionary War at age 16, was wounded in the Battle on Johns Island, recovered and served as Lieutenant at the siege of Charleston in 1780. After the war, he was for many years president of the board of trustees of Beaufort College, a member of the convention of South Carolina for the adoption of the Federal Constitution in 1788 and a member of the Continental Congress in 1789. In 1791, he was elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Second Congress, serving until 1793. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and a member of the South Carolina Senate. He died at age 52 in Beaufort, South Carolina.
