U.S. Congressman. He attended Hallowell Academy, (1805-07), studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Farmington, Maine, in 1812. He was town clerk of Farmington, (1814-19), a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1822, 29, 32) and served in the Maine State Senate, (1838-39). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for reelection, he practiced law until his death at age 67.
