Entrepreneur. He was a real estate investor in 19th-century California. Before coming to California, he was a dentist originally from New England, arriving in San Francisco, California, in 1853 and practicing dentistry there until 1866. In 1867, he purchased 4,600 acres of the Rancho La Providencia, and more than 4,000 acres of the Rancho San Rafael. He combined these two properties to form a large and extremely successful sheep ranch. He gave the railroad the right of way across the land in 1873. In 1886, he sold his holdings to the Providencia Land, Water and Development Company for about $240,000, which is calculated to be close to $8 million dollars in the early 21st century. The future development of this land was named "Burbank, California," in his honor. He built a theater and hotel in Burbank. The town was incorporated as a city of Los Angeles County in 1911 and became a major film and television production hub during the 20th century. A 12-foot bronze statue of Burbank located onWest Burbank Boulevard was dedicated in 2010.
