During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army as a Private in the Washington Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia and was at the surrender at Appomattox with General Robert E. Lee. After the war, he was manufacturer and dealer in plantation machinery at New Orleans. He was one of the organizers of the first electric lighting company established in New Orleans in 1880, active in the organization of the World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, (1884-85) a member of the Republican State central committee in 1884 and president of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, (1887-88). He was vice president of the New Orleans Board of Trade, when elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving (1889-91). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed melter and refiner of the United States mint at New Orleans, 1899-1901 and served as a member of the United States Assay Commission in 1912.
