US Congressman. Born in Skowhegan, Maine, he was the brother of Maine Governor Abner Coburn. He graduated from Waterville College, in 1839, taught at a plantation school in Tarboro, North Carolina, (1839-40) and was principal of the Bloomfield Academy Maine, (1840-44). He then studied law at the Harvard Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1845, commenced to practice law in Skowhegan, Maine and was a member of the Maine State Board of Education, (1849-50). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Israel Washburn, Jr. serving until 1861. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was postmaster of Skowhegan, (1868-77). He drowned while swimming in the Kennebec River, Skowhegan, Maine, at age 64.
