US Congressman, Entrepreneur. He was born one of four children as Clyde Harold Smith in Harmony, Maine, to Willard F. Smith (1851-1919), and his wife Angie Bartlett Smith (1853-1882), on June 9, 1876. Raised on a farm in Harmony, Maine, with his siblings, he later moved with his parents to Hartland, Maine, in 1891. He was educated locally in the common rural schools and also attended the prestigious Hartland Academy in Hartland, Maine. He later taught school and decided to enter politics. He served a term in the Maine State House of Representatives from 1899 to 1903. During this time, he also engaged in the retail clothing and hardware business in 1901, and served as Superintendent of Schools in Hartland, Maine, from 1903 to 1906. He then served on the Hartland, Maine, Board of Selectmen from 1904 to 1907, and then he moved to Skowhegan, Maine, where he was elected to a term to serve as the Sheriff of Somerset County, Maine, from 1905 to 1909. During his time living in Skowhegan, Maine, he engaged in the retail sales of automobiles, hardware and plumbing businesses, and banking and real estate. He also served another term served on the Hartland, Maine, Board of Selectmen from 1914 to 1932, and another term as a Member of the Maine State House of Representatives from 1919 to 1923. He was elected to a seat in the Maine State Senate to succeed the outgoing Leroy R. Folsom, and served Maine's 8th District in that position from January 3, 1923, to January 2, 1929. While serving in the Maine State Senate he was an ardent opponent of the Ku Klux Klan. Following his term in the Maine State Senate, he was succeeded in office by the incoming Blin W. Page. He was also Chairman of the State Highway Commission from 1928 to 1932 and was a Member of the Governor's Council representing the 4th District from 1933 to 1937. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Edward Carleton Moran Jr. (1894-1967), on January 3, 1937. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served Maine's 2nd District (Seventy-Fifth Congress and Seventy-Sixth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1937, until his death in office on April 8, 1940. After his death in office, he was succeeded by his wife, the United States Representative, and United States Senator Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995). He passed away in Washington, D.C., on April 8, 1940, at the age of 63, and he was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland, Maine. He was married to his wife, the United States Representative and the United States Senator Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995), on May 14, 1930. His wife passed away in Skowhegan, Maine, on May 29, 1995, at the age of 97, and her ashes are buried on the Margaret Chase Smith Library Grounds in Skowhegan, Maine. The couple had no children together.
