U.S. Congressman. Soon after the Revolutionary War, he acquired several thousand acres of land within the borders of New York State and founded the Village of Otsego in 1786. After 1791 when Otsego was split off into its own county, he was appointed as the county judge. In 1795, he was elected as a Federalist to the Forth Congress, served until 1797 and was reelected to the Sixth Congress, serving (1799 to 1801). After his term, he became a noted writer of historical novels related to the New York frontier. He died of natural causes at age 55. Cooper was the founder & namesake of Cooperstown, New York in Otsego County. His son, James Fenimore Cooper became an acclaimed author of historical romance novels like: "The Spy," "The Last of the Mohicans," "The Pathfinder," and other works.
