U.S. Senator, Nebraska Governor. Born in Aurora, Illinois, he moved to South Dakota, in 1875, engaged in mercantile pursuits, then settled in Hastings, Nebraska, in 1878 and founded the German National Bank. In 1901, he was elected as a Republican the 11th Governor of Nebraska. Upon his election to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Monroe L. Hayward, he resigned as governor and served in the senate (1901-05). Not a candidate for reelection, he then retired from political life. He died at age 70 in Hastings, Nebraska.
