U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Graduating from Tabor College Iowa, in 1890 he was the principal of the public schools in Leigh, Nebraska, (1890 to 1892). Graduating from the law department of the University of Nebraska, in 1893, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a trustee of Tabor College, (1895 to 1905) and a member of the Nebraska State House of Representatives, (1896 to 1898). In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1905. He was then elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1905 to 1911). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 67.
