US Congressman. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1854, first to Missouri and settled in Iowa, in 1861. He attended Iowa Agricultural College, graduated from the law department of Simpson Centenary College, in 1876, was admitted to the bar and opened a law practice in Aurora, Nebraska, in 1877. He also engaged in banking and in a group of creameries. In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 77.
