MUNCIE-David "Luke" Ferrell, age 71, met by his beloved Ann, went to be with God on Saturday, July 9, at Indiana University Health-Ball Memorial Hospital.

Luke was born March 2, 1940 in Beech Grove, Tennessee to the late George Thurman Hollis and Goldia Irene (Frazier) Ferrell. His family moved to Muncie in 1951. Luke graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1958 and was a lifelong fan of the Bearcats, holding season tickets to varsity boys' basketball games into the last year of his life.

He started passing newspapers for Muncie Newspapers, Incorporated when he was 13 and was officially hired on after a brief enlistment with the United States Air Force.Luke retired as the director of city circulation in 2000, after almost 40 consecutive years in the industry. Despite retiring, he continued passing newspapers until December 2010 and donated thousands of hours as a volunteer at Ball Memorial Hospital from 2001 until 2006. Luke was a long-time member of Fairlawn Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 41 years; one son, Darren DeShawn; one grandson, Richard Gold; and his two older brothers: Clarence and Howard Ferrell.

Left to cherish Luke's memory are three daughters: Debra (Daniel) Huston of Muncie, DeAnna (Tim) Jennings of Eaton, and DeRonda (Larry) Alexander of Muncie, and; one son: David (Jamie-Sue) Ferrell of Muncie; two sisters, Juanita and Brenda; five grandchildren: Daniel (Stephnie) Huston, DeLynnda Hill, Michael Huston, Caleb Jennings, and Sarah Jennings; one great-grandchild: Luke Daniel Huston;brothers and sisters in law, Lydia Riggins, June Schroader, Jane Ann Reading, Betty Webb, Don Eller, Curtis Eller, Tom Eller, and Jack Reading, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, exchange students he considered grandchildren, and friends. Luke knew no stranger, was generous with all he was acquainted, and many considered him a second father or grandfather.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Mike Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Friends and Family may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
