David William Carroll, age 81, of Brockton, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness. He was the loving and devoted husband of Mary (Wilkinson) Carroll for 57 years. David was born in Brockton, son of the late Capt. John F. Carroll, of the Brockton Fire Dept., who died in the Strand Theater fire, and Gertrude (Coopy) Carroll. David was a 1948 graduate of Brockton High School and received degrees from Stonehill College and Bridgewater State College. During the Korean conflict, David served in the U.S. Army as a military honor guard in Washington DC. After serving in the Army, David returned to Brockton to become a teacher in the Brockton Public Schools. Upon his retirement in 1988, David and Mary resided in North Eastham where they spent almost 20 happy years before returning to Brockton several years ago. In addition to his wife Mary, he leaves his four daughters, Jane Crowley and her husband Brian of Wellesley, Maryann Carroll of Hingham, Sara Carroll of North Easton and Tricia Cruise and her husband David of Brockton. David was the grandfather of Colleen, Christina, Ellen and Kathleen Crowley and Peter and Mary Kate Cruise. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and was the brother of the late John Carroll and Marie Brouillard. Visitation will be held at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St. (Rte. 123), Brockton, followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery, Avon.
