U.S. Congressman. Educated at Bacon College Kentucky, he taught school in Limestone County, Alabama, for four years. Moving to Jacksonville, Alabama, he was principal of the Jacksonville Female Academy, (1848-52) and of the Jacksonville Male Academy, (1853-57). In addition, he was editor of the Jacksonville Republican, (1851-52) and editor of the Sunny South, in 1855. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives (1857-58), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Jacksonville, Alabama. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized Company A of the 10th Alabama Regiment and served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army of Virginia. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving (1873-77). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
