Professional Football Official. Chairman emeritus of the Chicago Bears. He was a former singer who married Bears owner George Halas' daughter and went on to become the Bears chairman in 1983. Prior to becoming chairman when Halas died, he was vice president and treasurer for 17 years. In the early 1960s the Bears became one of the first teams to have interracial roommates when he asked Gayle Sayers to room with Brian Piccolo. He was a father figure to many players and led the team's charitable efforts. In 1984 he turned the team over to his son Michael but continued to keep an eye on the team that he loved.
