Colorado Governor. He graduated from West Bedford Academy, taught school and moved to Colorado, in 1859. There he was a farmer and served in the New Mexico Volunteers during the Civil War. After the war, he was justice of the Peace for Weld County Colorado and county commissioner, (1866-79). He also served in the Territorial Legislature in 1872 and one term in the Territorial Senate in 1875. in 1884, he was elected as a Republican the 4th Governor of Colorado, serving until 1887. While in office, he advocated the necessity of cultivating Colorado's reservoirs and irrigation ditches and he worked diligently to enrich the states' farming communities. After his term, he returned to his farming interests. He also built one of the largest reservoirs and canals in Colorado, plus constructed a mill at Eaton, the town that was named for him.
