Continental Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1750, represented the Stratford town in the sessions of the General Assembly in 1763 and was justice of the peace in 1764. During the Revolutionary War, he was appointed Colonel of the 16th Regiment, Continental Army, in 1771, accompanied General Wolcott’s forces to New York in 1776 and was in command of Continental forces against the British at Danbury in 1777. He resigned his colonelcy early in 1778, was a member of the council of safety in 1778 and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1776, 1778, 1780-82, 1784). In 1784, he was elected a member of the Continental Congress, serving until 1888. He was also judge of the probate court for Danbury District (1776-1813) served as one of the Connecticut Governor’s council.
