Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A soldier that served many flags and causes, he came to America with his family to Georgia and then served in the Mexican War with the 2nd Louisiana Infantry with the rank of Captain. Sometime after going to California for the Gold Rush he joined William Walker's Filibuster Army as a Captain and fought with Walker in Nicaragua. During Walker's last attempt to retake control of Nicaragua Anthony Rudler served as his second in command with the rank of Colonel. Walker failed in his attack to control the country and was executed; a fate that Rudler nearly shared, but he was instead imprisoned. Powerful friends in the United States were able to secure his release and he returned to Georgia in early 1861. He soon cast his lot with the Confederacy and quickly rose from the rank of Captain to Colonel of the 37th Georgia Infantry, leading the unit at the Battles of Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. In the latter battle he was severely wounded and saw no further service in the field. At War's end he returned to Augusta and died in 1871.
