U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and commenced to practice law in Howell, Michigan. He was prosecuting attorney of Livingston County in 1849. He moved to Greenville, Michigan, in 1851, was the first president of the village in 1851, prosecuting attorney of Montcalm County in 1853 and a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1852-54). During the Civil War, he served as a Major and Paymaster, with the Union Army. After the war, he elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving (1877-79). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 75.
