At the age of twenty-one, Andrew enrolled at Auburn on July 25, 1862 to serve for three years and was mustered in as Commissary Sergeant for the 111th New York Infantry on August 20th. Commissioned as the 2nd Lieutenant of Company D on November 30, 1863 and was mustered out of service on May 19, 1865.
