U.S. Senator. Successful in the manufacturing of cotton products, he graduated from the law department of Boston University in 1884, was admitted to the bar and began the practice of law in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1890-91) and a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1892-95). He was also a member of the commission to revise the statutes of Massachusetts, (1896-1900) and chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1924. In 1924, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry Cabot Lodge, serving until 1926. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his manufacturing interests until his death at age 76.
