U.S. Continental Congressman. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was an early American political pioneer. He graduated from Harvard College in 1744, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Boston. He was a Boston selectman in 1753, elected to the General Court in 1761, a member of the provincial assembly, (1761-74) and served as a delegate to the Provincial Congress in 1774. In 1774, he was elected to the First Continental Congress, serving until 1776 and also was Commissary General of Massachusetts, in 1775. Declining to be a candidate for election to the next Continental Congress, he was Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, (1780-88) and Acting Governor in 1785. In addition, he was a member of Massachusetts State constitutional convention which ratified the Federal Constitution in 1788 and one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He died at age 62 in Boston, Massachusetts.
