U.S. Congressman. Born in Keene, New Hampshire, he graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1813, was a private tutor, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1817 and commenced to practice law in Keene. He was Postmaster of Keene, (1818-29), served in the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1834, 36, 38-39) and was the first president of the Cheshire Railroad. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 79 in Keene, New Hampshire.
