U.S. Senator from Florida. He attended Gilbertsville Academy, graduated from Hamilton College New York, in 1826, engaged in mercantile pursuits in New York City, until 1850, moved to St. Augustine, Florida, in 1865 and conducted in the merchant business. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1869 to 1875). After leaving the Senate, he lived in retirement until his death at age 75.
