U.S. Congressman. Born in Williamsburg, Indiana, he completed preparatory studies in medicine, graduated a physician from the University of Maryland, in 1836 and proceeded to practice medicine in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as inspector of marine hospitals, engaged in the drug business, was president of the Lancaster City Council and was a medical professor at the Ohio Medical College. During the Civil War, he served as a Surgeon in the 3rd Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of medicine until his death at age 65 in Wheeling, West Virginia.
