U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union University in 1854, graduated from the law department of Cumberland University, in 1857, admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Smith County, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he served on the staffs of Confederate Brigadier Generals Wright and Mackall. After the war, he practiced law and was clerk of the Wilson County Tennessee, chancery clerk's office, (1870-75). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Samuel M. Fite and reelected to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until his death.
