U.S. Congressman. He attended several different schools, taught school for several years, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and commenced to practice in South Berwick, Maine. In 1823, he was elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until his death at age 42. His son John Holmes Burleigh, was also a Congressman.
