Civil War Union Army Officer. He entered the Union Army during the Civil war with a commission of 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in November 1861, and participated in the unit's February 1862 engagement at Roanoke, North Carolina. When Captain Henry Chew of Company I resigned due to ill health in March 1862, Samuel Hufty was promoted to Captain to fill the spot. He then led his company in the regiment's various battles in North Carolina and Southern Virginia from 1863 until June 1864. The previous May had seen the 9th New Jersey's commanding officer, Colonel Abram Zabriskie, receive a mortal wound at the Battle of Drewy's Bluff. When he succumbed to his wounds, all the officers under him were advanced one grade, and Samuel Hufty was made Major of the unit on June 14, 1864. In February 1865 he was promoted one final time, advancing to Lieutenant Colonel when previous Lt. Colonel William A. Curlis resigned due to disability. In this rank he served until the end of the war, and commanded the regiment on a number of occasions. He was mustered out of Federal service with his men in July 1865, having served three and a half years.
