World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Captain in the 13th Battalion of the New South Wales Australian Forces. On the night of February 4, 1917, he was ordered to lead his company's attack on German trench lines, near Gueudecourt, France. Over the next 24 hours they fought in merciless close quarter battles and suffered under intense shell-fire. With some 230 members of the Battalion being killed, Captain Murray's company remained engaged with the enemy until relieved. For bravery in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal, the Distinguished Service Cross and the French Croix de Guerre in October, 1918. He remained in the Army and retired a Lieutenant Colonel in 1944.
