World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the New South Wales, Australia Infantry. Near Bullecourt France, on May 6, 1917, a large party of Germans threatened to outflank his battalion. Corporal Howell, climbed onto the parapet and despite heavy rifle-fire proceeded to bomb the enemy back along the trench. When he ran out of bombs, he continued to assault the Germans with his bayonet until, severely wounded. For gallant conduct in the face of superior numbers, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in October 1917.
