Rachel was a daughter of Banyan and Nancy Wright Payne. Banyan had moved to Tipton County from Alabama about 1832 and lived in the Portersville area (now known as Atoka). Rachel received her education at Portersville Academy as did her husband. Their families were both active at the Salem Reformed Presbyterian Church which was nearby. Rachel married James Fentress Dickson shortly after the Civil War, on November 23, 1865. They were engaged in farming and eventually her husband would manage Banyan Payne's extensive business interests in Tipton County. Rachel would become a mother to eight children, but only three lived beyond their teens: Vernon Banyan (who would become a physician), Mineola Alabama, and Fentress Dickson. After she was widowed, Rachel moved in with her son and family, Dr. Vernon B. Dickson where she resided until her death at the age of 93.
