Actress. She was the daughter of Hollywood film director Edwin Carewe (original name Jay Fox). Growing up, she went by Violet Carewe. It was not until 1926 that she was given her stage name, Rita Carewe. Her first debut was in the silent film "Habit" in 1921, when she was twelve years old. Her father signed her to a five-year contract with First National Pictures when she appeared in the 1925 film "Joanna," which he directed. She debuted in "High Steppers" (1926) under her new contract. In 1927, she was one of thirteen actresses chosen as one of the Wampas (Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers), which led to "Resurrection" (1927), "The Stronger Will" (1928), "Ramona" (1928), and "Revenge" (1928). Her first sound film appearance was in "Prince Gabby" (1929), and her final film appearance was in "Radio Kisses" (1930). In 1928, she married actor Leroy Mason. They divorced in 1935 after a widely publicized scandal.
