US Congressman, US Senator, Louisiana Governor. He was elected at age 22 to represent Tennessee in the US House of Representatives despite being under the 25-year age limit and served from November 23, 1797 to 1801. Before being a young lawyer in Tennessee, he had attended the College of William and Mary, Richmond Academy, and then entering law. Becoming political at age 16, he moved to New York City, which was then the seat of U.S. Congress and held a position with a clerk to learn the workings of government. In 1801 he was appointed as Governor of the Mississippi territory and served until 1803. He served for a total of thirteen years as Louisiana's executive administrator. When Louisiana became a state, he was appointed as Governor of the Orleans territory and served from 1804 to 1812. In 1812 he was elected the first Governor of Louisiana and served until 1816 when he was elected to the US Senate. He died with liver failure in office in 1817 after only serving a few months in the Senate. In his honor, the United States Army named a base Camp Claiborne, which is located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Posthumously in 1993, he was inducted among the first 13 inductees into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame.

Gravesite Details

Originally buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery of St. Louis Cemetery Number 1, in New Orleans, he was later reinterred in Metairie Cemetery since he was a protestant.
