U.S. Congressman, Georgia Governor. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1832, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced to practice law in Columbus, Georgia in 1836. He was prosecuting attorney of Muscogee County, Georgia, when elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-second Congress, serving 1851-53. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed after the Civil War by President Andrew Johnson the 43rd Governor of Georgia, serving June 17, 1865-December 14, 1865. During his brief term as Governor, the Secession Ordinance was repealed, a new constitution was adopted and the State's war debt was repudiated. After leaving office, he held the position as collector of customs at the Port of Savannah, Georgia, (1866-69). His last public office was as judge of the Superior Court of Georgia (1869-75).
