Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He entered the Union Army at New York and served as a Corporal in Company E, 7th U. S. Infantry. In the conflict at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on May 1,1863, he took up the unit colors from the hands of the flag bearer who had been shot down and carried them through the remainder of the battle.
