World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Nepal, South Asia, he served as an acting Subedar in the 2nd Battalion, 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles, Indian Army of the British Troops. During the Burma Campaign, on the dates June 25-26, 1944, acting Subedar Thapa was in command of a small isolated hill post at Bishenpur, India, when the Japanese attacked in force. He inspired his men, held the ground and the enemy were beaten off, but had many causalities and he requested reinforcements. When the replacements arrived some hours later, they also suffered heavy casualties. The next day, acting Subedar Thapa retrieved the replacements ammunition from the dead in the field himself and mounted an offensive with grenades and kukris, fighting the enemy until he was killed. For prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on October 10, 1944.
