U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Martin College, in 1941 and served during World War II, as a Captain in the US Army Air Corps. After the war, he became a successful owner of a soft-drink bottling plant, plus a florist and nurseryman, (1946-47) and postmaster of Pulaski, Tennessee, (1947-54). In 1955, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fourth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1964. He was then as a Democrat to the United States Senate to complete the unexpired term caused by the death of Estes Kefauver and served (1964-67). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was an owner of consulting firm in Washington, D.C., until he retired in 1976.
