U.S. Congressman. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, he graduated from Amherst College, Harvard Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1926 and practiced law in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He was secretary of the board of trustees of Deerfield Academy, (1932-35), president of the Massachusetts Selectmen’s Association, (1935-38), secretary of the Deerfield Republican Town committee, (1928-38), a member of the Republican State committee, (1936-38) and district attorney of the northwestern district of Massachusetts, (1939-44). In 1945, he was elected as a Republican to the Congress Seventy-ninth and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1959. After leaving office, he engaged in the practice of law until his death.
