Champagne, Wine Vintner. Born in Sainte-Menehould, France, he was a Benedictine monk noted for his contributions to the production and quality of champagnes and wines. In 1668, he was transferred to the Abby of Hautvillers, where he served as cellarer for its vineyard holdings for the rest of his life. There, he was credited with the invention of sparking champagne and crisp Bloc white wines when the region's wines were predominantly still red. The prestige Moët-Chandon and Dom Pérignon champagnes which were named in his honor, along with a variety of Bloc wines are regarded as the finest in the world. He died in Hautvillers, France, as a sign of honor and respect, he was buried in a section of the abbey cemetery traditionally reserved only for Abbots.
